Commentary
"[The Maria Konigin] worship room forms a simple, one might say respectful, square 78 feet on a side, its reticence acting as a frame for the glorious window wall. From one end to the other, and from top to bottom, this gray-green Wunderwald echoes the world of natureand the small park outsidewith its abstracted trees and cascade of leaves. Designed by the architect and Heinz Bienfeld, it forms one of the great windows of our time. Each of its seven sections, divided by black exposed steel columns, contains two medallions of the Virgin made of small pieces of glass recovered from bombed churches. These not only add color accents but, more important, evoke liturgical symbolism. A clear glass nexus joins the detached baptistry to the nave, and open benches serve for congregational seats. Though not clearly visible...the ceiling is upheld by four bright vermilion pipe columns, complements to the gray-green glass...."
